Does keeping the geyser on save electricity?

Keeping the geyser on continuously does not save electricity and can actually result in higher energy consumption and increased electricity bills. Geysers, especially electric ones, consume energy to maintain the water temperature continuously, even when hot water is not being used. This continuous heating process, known as standby heat loss, results in energy wastage and higher electricity costs.

Here’s why keeping the geyser on continuously does not save electricity:

  1. Standby Heat Loss: When the geyser is left on continuously, it heats the water inside the tank to the desired temperature and maintains that temperature regardless of whether hot water is being used. This constant heating results in standby heat loss, where heat escapes from the tank into the surrounding environment, wasting energy.
  1. Energy Waste: Continuous operation of the geyser consumes energy unnecessarily, leading to higher electricity consumption and increased energy bills. The longer the geyser remains on without being used, the more energy is wasted in maintaining the water temperature.
  1. Peak Load Contribution: Geysers often operate during peak electricity demand periods, contributing to overall energy demand on the grid. Keeping the geyser on continuously adds to peak load demand and can strain the electrical grid during peak hours.
  1. Component Wear and Tear: Continuous operation of the geyser can lead to increased wear and tear on internal components, potentially reducing the lifespan of the unit and increasing maintenance requirements over time.

To maximize energy savings and efficiency, it’s advisable to turn off the geyser when it’s not in use or during periods of extended absence, such as vacations or weekends. Additionally, consider using a timer or programmable thermostat to schedule the geyser to turn on only during periods when hot water is needed, such as in the morning or evening.

By adopting these practices and being mindful of your geyser’s energy consumption, you can reduce electricity usage, lower your utility bills, and contribute to energy conservation efforts.
