How do I know if my geyser element is bad?

If you suspect that your geyser element may be faulty, there are several signs and symptoms to look out for. Here’s how to determine if your geyser element is bad:

  1. No Hot Water: If your geyser is not producing hot water or if the water is not heating up as quickly as usual, it could be a sign that one or both of the heating elements are not functioning properly.
  1. Inadequate Heating: If the water temperature from your geyser is consistently lower than the set temperature on the thermostat, it may indicate a problem with one of the heating elements.
  1. Visible Damage: Inspect the heating elements for any visible signs of damage, such as corrosion, scaling, or breaks in the heating coils. If the heating elements appear worn, corroded, or damaged, they may need to be replaced.
  1. Testing with a Multimeter: You can use a multimeter to test the continuity of the heating elements and determine if they are functioning properly. Disconnect the power supply to the geyser and remove the access panel to access the heating elements. Set the multimeter to the resistance or ohms setting and touch the probes to the terminals on the heating elements. A reading of infinite resistance indicates a bad heating element, while a reading of low resistance indicates that the heating element is functioning correctly.
  1. Tripped Circuit Breaker: If the circuit breaker for the geyser repeatedly trips, it may be a sign of a short circuit or overload caused by a faulty heating element. Resetting the circuit breaker may temporarily restore power, but if the issue persists, it may indicate a problem with the heating element.
  1. Age of Geyser: Heating elements can wear out over time due to corrosion, scaling, and general wear and tear. If your geyser is older and has never had the heating elements replaced, they may be nearing the end of their lifespan and may need to be replaced.

If you suspect that one or both of the heating elements in your geyser are bad, it’s essential to have them inspected and tested by a qualified plumber or technician. They can diagnose the problem accurately, recommend appropriate repairs or replacements, and ensure that your geyser operates safely and efficiently.
