Why would water heater leak from bottom?

A water heater leaking from the bottom can be a sign of several potential issues:

  1. Internal Corrosion: Over time, sediment buildup and corrosion inside the tank can weaken the metal, causing it to develop small holes or cracks. This can result in water leaking out from the bottom of the tank.
  1. Faulty Drain Valve: The drain valve at the bottom of the water heater may be loose, damaged, or faulty, causing water to leak from it.
  1. High Pressure: Excessive pressure within the tank can cause it to rupture or develop leaks, especially at the weakest points, which are often at the bottom.
  1. Temperature and Pressure Relief Valve (TPR Valve) Issues: If the TPR valve is malfunctioning, it can cause the pressure inside the tank to increase, leading to leaks.
  1. Condensation: Sometimes, especially in humid environments, condensation can form on the outside of the tank, giving the appearance of a leak. However, if the water is actually coming from the bottom, this is unlikely to be the cause.
  1. Installation Problems: Poor installation or incorrect fittings can also cause leaks from the bottom of the water heater.

Regardless of the cause, a leaking water heater should be addressed promptly to prevent water damage and potentially hazardous situations like electrical issues or mold growth. It’s advisable to shut off the water supply to the heater and contact a professional plumber to inspect and repair the issue.
